Guro sa Sining ng Bayan, Inc. (GUSI)

is a non-profit and non-government organization formed in 2011 providing alternative learning and teaching opportunities for educators in the field of arts and culture.

 

GUSI holds a professional track record of working with the Department of Health (DOH), the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), Cultural Center of the Philippines, UNICEF Philippines, University of the Philippines (Diliman), and Center for Health Solutions and Innovations Philippines.  As a collective of actors, writers, teachers and researchers, we believe that storytelling affects human behavior by creating connections and tapping into the emotions and consciousness of our audiences, whether through live performance, videography or virtual dramatic performances. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we all need to move forward in a manner where health is of utmost priority.  Radical changes have occurred in all industries specifically in terms of socialization and mobility, and as creative professionals, we firmly uphold our role in advocating community health and well-being through our artistic endeavors.

GLECY C. ATIENZA

FOUNDER & CHAIRMAN

Glecy teaches Philippine Literature, Creative Writing, and Philippine Studies at the Department of Filipino and Philippine Literature. She grew up in Tondo and Quezon City and studied at the University of the Philippines, Diliman. She trained for theater with PETA and further honed her theater work as primemover of projects for the National Commission on Culture and the Arts, the Cultural Center of the Philippines through the help of the Alyansa ng mga Manggagawang Pangkultura sa Kamaynilaan at Karatig Pook and Guro sa Sining ng Bayan, Inc., which she helped organize. Her valuable work in the arts, research, education, and cultural work has been recognized by international and national institutions such as the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature, CCP Literary Awards, TOWNS The Outstanding Women in the Nation’s Service, The Nippon Foundation Fellowships for Asian Public Intellectuals, The 2018 Philippine Quill Awards, The Grand Anvil Awards, ALIW Awards, One UP Professiosarial Chair Award, UP Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Faculty in Research, Published Research, Extension Work, Teaching, One UP Professorial Chair Award, and 2019 UP Artists’ Productivity Award. Her plays include “Lutong Bahay” (Home Cooking,1994), “Ang Lihim ng Limot na Lipi” (The Secret of the Forgotten Race, 1998), “Kuwatro Kantos” ( Four Corners, 1995), “Pataya/Patihaya” (Make Me a Bet/Make Me a Bed, 2003/2006/2015), “Titser ng Bayan” (People’s Teacher 2004/2012/2014/2017), “Ang Epiko ng Bayani ng Maynila” (An Epic of Manila’s Hero, 2007), “Palaka sa Balon” (Frogs in a Well, 2017), “Hello Healthy Goodbye Dirty” (2014). She also translated plays to Filipino - “Bulawan” (Gold, 1990), “Miles Gloriosus” (The Braggart Warrior, 2000), “The Crucible” (Ang Urian, 2006), “The Vagina Monologues” (Usapang Puki, 2002).

ROBERTO "BOBET" MENDOZA

Bobet teaches creative writing, musical composition, social sciences at the Manila Tytana Colleges, Pasay City. He is also the artistic director and musical composer of the Cultural Affairs Program and the Haraya Artists’ Ensemble of Manila Tytana Colleges. He hails from Bocaue, Bulacan and finished his bachelor’s degree and masteral degree in Philippine Studies at the University of the Philippines, Diliman. He is currently pursuing a degree in PhD Creative Writing (Filipino) in the same university. He honed his craft in poetry, musical composition, and directing in Teatro Pabrika, PETA, GMA 7 and with the Alyansa ng mga Manggagawang Pangkultura sa Kamaynilaan at Karatig Pook and Guro sa Sining ng Bayan Inc which he formed. He served as member of the National Committee on Dramatic Arts of the National Commission on Culture and the Arts. His works have been recognized by the Gawad Ani para sa Awit (1994), ALIW Awards (2017), The Quill Awards ( 2017), the Grand Anvil Awards (2018). He has composed more than 100 songs. Among them are “Titser ng Bayan” from the album “TnB Titser ng Bayan” (2014), “Ang Tae kong Pag-ibig” (My Love the Poop) from the album “Hello Healthy, Goodbye Dumi!”, (2014), “Tsunami” from the album “Handa Awit Lindol” (Ready Sing, Earthquake, (2015) and the songs of the musicale “Pataya/Patihaya” (Make Me a Bed/Bet, 2003), “Your Edge Tytana” (2015), “ U4U Teen Trail Theme Song” (2015), “Meron Ako “ (I Have, 2018). He also composed “Realize the Art of Life” (2000).

ROMUALDO "RONIE" PROTACIO

Ronie earned his Master's Degree in Education Major in Instructional Media & Design from the University of Makati where he's the Executive Director of the Center for Curriculum and Materials Development, professor, and the Artistic Director/founder of its student-led theater organization - Collective Arts of Students and Thespians (CAST). He organized various civic and cultural groups in communities and schools and has participated, organized and directed a number of cultural activities like art camps, theater festivals, conferences, congresses and artists fora. He also appeared as an actor in local TV shows and film productions, like “Student Canteen”, “Maalaala Mo Kaya”, “Magpakailanman”, “Filipinas”, “Santasantita”, “Ang Cute ng Ina Mo”, and more. He has facilitated various seminars and workshops like – BITAW, children’s theater workshop, leadership trainings, music and movement workshop, acting for TV, video production, advanced acting and directing.

Anthony finished BS Education in University of Malabon City. He founded the students' theater group Tanghalang Bagong Sibol in Malabon National High School, where he also studied secondary education and now a teacher-director, has been exsisting for 24 years and performed in local and international stages. Tanghalang Bangong Sibol Theater and Dance Company has been invited to perform in Bangkok Thailand and China to represent the Philippines, and has been recognized in Aliw Award Foundation. Anthony became a scholar in the prestigious dance institutions, like Halili-Cruz School of Dance and Douglas Nierras' Power Dance that honed his talent and skills in performing arts, especially in the field of dance. He does not hesitate to share his learnings to the teachers and members of GUSI ng Bayan and Alyansa, Inc. through dance and movement workshop and training.
